EXPERIENCE & EXPERTISE
Jason’s experience is unusual in combining a full career in FICC and commodities markets with later responsibility for audit, firm-wide special risk review, and the front-to-back operating platform of an investment bank in Asia Pacific. Areas of particular depth include:
-
Physical and financial commodity markets globally, with particular depth in base and precious metals, commodity hybrids, indices, notes and exchange-traded products.
-
Sales and trading across cash and derivative products in commodities, rates, FX and credit, including structured and exotic risk.
-
Client coverage and market practice across corporate, institutional, public-sector, private-bank, hedge-fund and private-equity counterparties.
-
Pricing, marking, valuation and reserving methodologies in traded products, including the design of index and ETP programmes and the capacity, transparency and suitability constraints that sit around them.
-
Electronic and algorithmic trading: platform build, order management, pre-hedging, best execution and the control framework required of automated markets.
-
The full transaction lifecycle — idea generation, structuring, pricing, execution, confirmation, settlement, lifecycle events and post-trade services — and the use of automation to reduce operational error and enforce regulatory standards.
-
Identification, escalation and management of credit, market, operational, legal, compliance, conduct and reputational risk, including firm-wide special reviews of material and emerging exposures.
-
Regulatory design and implementation: Dodd-Frank, Volcker, Basel, MiFID II, swap-data reporting, position limits, benchmarks and fixes, legal-entity usage, and the country rules of the UK, Hong Kong, Singapore, Japan and mainland China.
-
Senior regulated roles, including Head of Audit for UBS Hong Kong (all business lines) and for UBS Investment Bank Asia Pacific (Markets, Banking and Research); HKMA Manager and Identified Individual; and SFC Manager-in-Charge.
-
Front-to-back operating platforms: as APAC Chief Operating Officer of UBS Investment Bank, accountability for Banking, Markets and Research across 13 locations, with revenues of US$2.5 billion+ and more than 4,000 staff.
-
Post-merger and intra-group integration: leadership of the Credit Suisse APAC integration of people, positions and infrastructure, including legal-entity, real-estate and licensing solutions, and Wealth / Investment Bank integration strategy in India, China and Korea.
-
Crisis management in live market failures — as a counterparty to Enron, through the collapse and administration of Lehman Brothers (including a subsequent retainer by PwC as administrator), and through the integration of Credit Suisse into UBS.
-
Culture, conduct and conflicts: suitability and appropriateness, treatment of customers, Chinese walls and MNPI, conflict management, and the construction of a durable conduct framework.
-
Board and governance experience over more than 25 years in five jurisdictions, including regulated broker-dealer entities in the UK, Hong Kong, Singapore and China, and non-executive roles at ASIFMA and the U-GO Foundation.
